- Le premier volume des Ouvres complètes était intitulé Ouvres de jeunesse, mais la jeunesse, quand s'achève-t-elle ? Certains événements de la vie de Flaubert peuvent servir de bornes, si l'on y tient : une crise d'épilepsie en 1844, la découverte de la Tentation de saint Antoine de Bruegel en 1845, en 1846 les morts du père et de la soeur, ou la rencontre de Louise Colet. Mais là n'est pas l'essentiel. La jeunesse littéraire s'achève quand disparaît l'allégresse d'écrire. Flaubert entre alors dans la grande étude du style. Par les champs et par les grèves : la première chose que j'aie écrite péniblement. Suit une parenthèse anxieuse : (je ne sais où cette difficulté de trouver le mot s'arrêtera). Nous savons, nous, qu'elle ne s'arrêtera pas. Par les champs est un carrefour. La jeunesse y aboutit, l'art s'y déclare. Bientôt, il faudra faire de chaque phrase une oeuvre en soi. Flaubert racontant ses voyages, en Bretagne ou en Orient, peut bien lorgner ici ou là du côté de Chateaubriand : sa vision est personnelle. Etre un oeil, regarder sans songer à aucun livre, puis, péniblement, faire oeuvre, s'efforcer de créer une perfection. Péniblement, en effet. Le jeune Flaubert voulait plaire ; les très étonnants scénarios de théâtre recueillis ici sont comme les séquelles d'un vieux désir de gloire (l'auteur ! l'auteur ! ). Mais ce désir-là n'a qu'un temps ; lui succède la quête du Beau, qui est un combat sans fin. L'empoisonnement de la Bovary m'avait fait dégueuler dans mon pot de chambre. L'assaut de Carthage dans Salammbô me procure des courbatures dans les bras. La Tentation de saint Antoine occupe Flaubert pendant près de trente ans. On en trouvera ici les première et deuxième versions, qu'on ne lit jamais : la première, luxuriante et onirique, est mise au placard en 1849 ; la deuxième, où l'étrangeté naît de la concision, est laissée de côté en 1856 : trop audacieuse en un temps où le procureur impérial incrimine la couleur sensuelle de Madame Bovary. Faire oeuvre, c'est donc aussi, pour Flaubert, sacrifier, supprimer (on exhume ici plusieurs épisodes retranchés de Madame Bovary) et renoncer par avance à toute satisfaction. Tel est le prix à payer (par l'auteur) pour que le lecteur puisse un jour monter sur ce grand Trottoir roulant que sont les pages de Flaubert (Proust). Une expérience unique : les lois du langage paraissent avoir changé ; une variation dans le temps des verbes bouleverse notre vision des choses ; et l'on avance, comme en atmosphère modifiée, dans quelque chose de pur comme un parfum, de fort comme la pierre, d'insaisissable comme un chant.
